Piercing Aftercare FAQs
How often should I clean a new piercing?
We generally recommend cleaning your piercing twice daily using packaged sterile saline containing 0.9% sodium chloride. Avoid over-cleaning, as this can also cause irritation.
Should I twist or rotate my jewellery?
No. There is no need to twist or rotate jewellery while your piercing heals. Moving the jewellery unnecessarily can irritate the healing tissue.
Can I make my own salt water?
We recommend using packaged sterile saline rather than homemade salt-water solutions. Homemade mixtures are difficult to prepare at the correct concentration and are not sterile.
What products should I avoid?
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, iodine, harsh antibacterial products and ointments unless specifically recommended by an appropriate healthcare professional.
When should my jewellery be downsized?
Many piercings are initially fitted with longer jewellery to accommodate swelling. Once the initial swelling has reduced, your piercer may recommend downsizing.
We generally recommend a piercing check-up at around the six-week mark, although the correct timing will depend on the piercing and how it is healing.
When should I contact my piercer?
Seek professional advice if you notice increasing redness, swelling, heat or pain, unusual discharge or bleeding, jewellery becoming embedded, or anything else that concerns you.
If you suspect an infection or have significant symptoms, seek appropriate medical advice rather than removing the jewellery yourself without professional guidance.
